Back to School Worries

Is Your Child Worried About Going to School?

By Anna Johnson, Psychologist

Going to school is supposed to be pretty straightforward, isn’t it?

For some students, that’s actually true! But for many others it isn’t. The challenges can be relatively minor, like children being completely distracted so that parents feel they need to rant and push constantly to get their kids to school on time, but sometimes there are more troubling concerns.

Some of these issues can be:

  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Morning tummy aches or headaches
  • Vomiting or diarrhoea
  • Worries about friendships at school
  • Worries about school work
  • Talking about not wanting to go to school, or being worried about going to school
  • Tantrums or distress about school or going to school
  • Physical resistance to going to school
  • Refusing to go to school

These issues can be exacerbated after a break from school, such as illness, weekends or school holidays. Often children can’t explain what is is that they feel uncomfortable about, which can be incredibly frustrating! As a parent of a child who is regularly experiencing any of these issues, you may feel overwhelmed, powerless and confused, and that your home is a battlefield.

Things can be different…. you don’t need to deal with this alone

Managing school reluctance or refusal is a team effort, and involves families, schools and the student themselves. I can assist you and your child to become confident in their ability to cope with school, to overcome anxiety when it arises, and work to change your family dynamic from a constant battleground to a place where encouragement and positive interactions happen regularly!
